From Idea to Implementation: Custom Carts Built for Real Operations

Every warehouse, distribution center, and e-commerce operation works a little differently—which is why off-the-shelf material handling carts don’t always cut it. At Rol-Away, every custom project starts with a conversation. A client reaches out with a challenge to solve, whether that’s improving picking efficiency, streamlining replenishment, or designing a cart that fits specific totes, aisles, or workflows. Some customers come to us with detailed specs, while others rely on our team to help define the best solution for their operation. Either way, we design carts that are built to perform in real-world environments.

Once we understand how the cart will be used, we talk through features and materials. For many clients—especially in retail and e-commerce—aluminum pick carts are a popular choice thanks to their lightweight design, corrosion resistance, and ease of maneuverability. For heavier-duty applications, steel carts offer higher weight capacity, while stainless steel carts are ideal for food service and medical settings. We also design carts with integrated ladders or stools, adjustable shelving, scanner holders, rechargeable batteries, and custom dimensions to support faster, safer order picking and replenishment.

After aligning on the design and providing a general quote, we create a complimentary SolidWorks drawing so clients can visualize the cart before it’s built. Most customers start with a single prototype—often a custom pick cart or replenishment cart—to test in their facility. This allows teams to validate ergonomics, aisle clearance, ladder height, and storage capacity before committing to a larger quantity. Our lead times are always transparent and can be as short as two weeks, depending on the build.

Once the prototype is approved, we move seamlessly into production. Clients can choose to prepay freight or arrange their own shipping, and after delivery, we encourage real-world testing. If adjustments are needed—whether it’s shelf spacing, ladder configuration, or tote sizing—we’ll revise the drawing and quote accordingly. From e-commerce fulfillment centers to retail distribution and archival storage, our custom material handling carts are built to evolve alongside your operation. At Rol-Away, we don’t just manufacture carts—we create long-term solutions that improve efficiency, safety, and productivity for years to come.
